MR8 Bulb FAQs

What does the MR8 designation mean?

The designation is actually made up of two codes, MR and 8. The former stands for “multifaceted reflector,” which refers to the bulb’s housing format. This type of housing is what dictates the bulb’s directional lighting spread. The latter refers to the bulb’s diameter in terms of 1/8-inch increments. In other words, the diameter of an MR8 light bulb is one inch.

How many MR8 light bulbs do I need?

The size and low wattage of MR8 light bulbs mean that you have to use multiple bulbs to adequately light spaces. The exact number varies on the size of your space, power constraints, and your overall budget. However, we also suggest utilizing stronger bulbs with a wider beam angle to complement MR8 bulbs if you need to adequately illuminate larger areas.

Are MR8 bulbs easy to install?

Installing or changing an MR8 bulb is easy, especially because most bulbs in this type utilize two pins, which go into a socket within a fixture. After removing any additional fixture pieces, such as a protective lens and retaining ring, you can easily pry the bulb from its socket. If you have a halogen MR8 bulb, let it cool down prior to taking it out of the fixture. The high heat generated during use can linger after the power to the bulb is cut off.

What is the lifespan of an MR8 LED bulb?

LED bulbs are the most energy-efficient bulbs available on the market, making them a staple in most lighting setups. With proper lighting maintenance, you can expect your LED bulbs to last anywhere between 15,000 and 25,000 hours or 1 to 3 years on average.

How do I dispose of an MR8 bulb?

If you use MR8 LED bulbs, you can easily recycle the light bulbs at your local hardware store or municipality. If local options aren’t available, you can also go online and buy an LED bulb recycling kit. The small amount of metals and microchips used within the bulb can be repurposed for other items in the future. If you have older halogen MR8 bulbs, you can easily dispose of them in the trash. However, we recommend wrapping the bulb in newspaper or putting it in a smaller plastic bag to reduce the chances of the bulb’s quartz glass breaking and making it difficult to clean up the mess.
