Tips & Tricks on how to create the best install for your home.

Glass vs. Plastic Light Bulbs

Like most instances, choosing your bulb material is case-specific. While glass better prevents premature evaporation of the bulb’s interior, it poses a dilemma if the bulb falls and breaks in your yard. Glass gently edges out plastic when it comes to durability, but plastic is easier to maintain. If pools or young children are in the equation, we recommend going the plastic route.

Enhanced Cable Management

Waterproof plastic covering allows you to split lines and create a comprehensive lighting plan measured to your specifications. These connectors will help you perform a safe, quick, and professional installation without the need for junction boxes or messy wire splices.

FAQs on Patio String Lights

Can I install string lights without drilling?

You can use various adhesive hooks or strips if you’d rather avoid drilling into walls or structures to hang your lights. However, ensure that they can withstand both the overall weight of the string lighting kit as well as changing weather conditions. If possible, we still recommend drilling into secure places and utilizing hooks and hangers for a more secure setup.

How high should I install my string lights?

Your patio string lights should be placed high enough to provide illumination over the specified area without causing obstructions for others. A good rule of thumb is to place them at a minimum height of 8 feet so as to not block most people when they walk through the space. If your outdoor structure is lower than 8 feet, you can still put up your string lighting setup, but you’ll need to be more cognizant of clearance space.

Are patio string lights energy efficient?

Gone are the days when incandescent bulbs where the only option for string lighting. Today’s LED bulbs can provide the same aesthetic at a fraction of the cost both in terms of unit price and utility bills. The low-wattage requirement of LEDs means they are not hot to the touch, reducing the likelihood of any accidents and have a longer lifespan, which means you don’t have to worry about bulb replacements for a few years.

How much wire do I need to hang my string lights?

The answer really depends on the space as well as your preferred layout style. Length will also come into play when deciding if the final result will have the strings in a draped or pulled tight presentation. Before drilling any holes or setting up hooks, it’s best to get accurate measurements of the area where you want to place the lights and create mock-ups of your lighting vision to ensure that you have the space, budget, and time to properly install your bistro lights outdoors.

Is it safe to leave string lights up all year round?

You can leave patio strings lights out all year round, provided they have adequate protection from the elements. Specifically, ensure that the wire connectors are waterproof to reduce electrical accidents and hazards that could occur during inclement weather. In terms of bulbs, make sure that they have an IP65 rating, which is the bare minimum for waterproof protection. Even with the added protection, you should still conduct maintenance throughout the year to ensure that the bulbs are free of dust, debris, and other particles that could reduce its effectiveness and overall lifespan.
