Halogen Bulb FAQs

Are outdoor halogen bulbs the same as incandescent bulbs?

While both bulbs have the same lighting process, where electricity heats the filament to create the illuminating glow, halogen bulbs are vastly different from their incandescent counterparts, especially when it comes to energy efficiency. As the name suggests, halogen bulbs incorporate halogen gas, which combines with the evaporated tungsten atoms from the filament. This combination adds tungsten back into the filament, increasing the lifespan of the bulb. To account for this exchange and the high heat output, halogen bulbs also utilize a quartz glass casing, which is more durable than the standard glass used for incandescent lights.

Do halogen bulbs need special handling?

The lighting process of halogen bulbs produces high temperatures that can easily leave burns on your skin without proper lighting tools. When switching out outdoor halogen bulbs, give the old bulb time to cool down before taking it out of the fixture. This reduces the chances of getting burned from the bulb’s residual heat, which can still linger even after power is cut off from the bulb. Even though the quartz casing is more durable than standard glass, it’s still best to wear gloves when handling halogen bulbs to prevent cuts if or when the bulb breaks.

What are the advantages of halogen bulbs?

Compared to incandescent bulbs, halogen lights utilize less energy, making them a sensible lighting option when you want to cut costs on your next utility bill. Even with the reduction in energy usage, halogen bulbs produce more visible light, making them ideal for task lighting. Halogens also offer a wider range of color temperatures compared to incandescents, adding more versatility to the bulb.

Can I use halogen bulbs as landscape lights?

Halogen landscape lights are a great option when you need clear, vibrant illumination without paying a high upfront cost. From path lighting to flood lights, halogen bulbs perform well in outdoor spaces with crisp, clear light that makes it easy to navigate through any space. When conducting landscape lighting maintenance, make sure that you remove any dirt or debris from the bulb. The heat output from halogen bulbs makes them a potential hazard, and keeping the bulbs clean also extends their lifespan.

How do I dispose of halogen bulbs?

It’s safe to dispose of halogen bulbs in the trash. Unlike LEDs, halogen bulbs do not have enough recyclable material within them to be reused in other items. When disposing of old halogen bulbs, we recommend wrapping them in plastic bags or newspaper. Even with a more durable quartz glass, these bulbs can still shatter, and encasing the bulb in bags or paper reduces the risk of injury and clean up when it breaks.
