The 12/2 low-voltage wire is the ideal starting place for most lighting systems. If you have a larger space and need to cover more distance with wiring, you might opt for a larger gauge, which has more copper, to compensate for potential voltage drops across long distances. Regardless of your choice, all low-voltage wires need to be buried underground for aesthetics and safety purposes.

Low-voltage wire is not suitable for line voltage lighting systems. At the most, these wires can handle 30 volts. Using them in a line voltage setup is dangerous and can potentially result in injuries and a damaged system.

Ideally, you should conduct lighting maintenance in between seasons, though you can also check your outdoor lighting setup after inclement weather. In either case, make sure that the wires are still fully buried underground. If you see them coming out, check to see if there are other issues with the surrounding wires or area. Make sure to check for frayed wiring as well, which can cause long-term issues with your setup.
